Tree planting with the Sarapico

If you start at TerraLab’s office, near Melbourne Australia and spin the globe 180 degrees, at the same latitude, you’ll end up near Montevideo, Uruguay. Nestled in the historic South American city, you’ll find Ferrando & Asociados (Ferrando and Associates), a progressive forestry consultancy striving to lead the sector in data science and technology. What do these two distant companies have in common? The STA logger and their drive to innovate.

In 2022, the STA logger team announced that the device could also be used to record tree planting. Ferrando and Associates recognised this capability and in 2023 adapted the STA logger to work with their country’s manual tree planting solution, the Sarapico. What they achieved was the ability to geolocate every tree planting event, without their team members breaking a stride. The STA logger was triggered automatically when plants were installed.
